Building Bridges for Human Solidarity: Reflections from the Fratelli Tutti Conference at Tangaza University
From 19th to 21st August 2021, Tangaza University in Nairobi, Kenya, became a beacon of interfaith dialogue and unity through the “Fratelli Tutti” conference. Organized by the Institute for Interreligious Dialogue and Islamic Studies (IRDIs) and supported by esteemed partners such as the Harmony Institute, Umma University, and the Civil Peace Service, this event drew attention to Pope Francis’ groundbreaking encyclical, Fratelli Tutti. The theme, Building Bridges for Human Solidarity, invited diverse communities to reflect on a shared future grounded in fraternity, peace, and cooperation.
The Spirit of Fratelli Tutti
Fratelli Tutti, translated as Brothers All, reflects Pope Francis’ deep concern for global unity and fraternity. The encyclical speaks to the heart of today’s fractured world, calling for a renewed commitment to solidarity, dialogue, and social friendship. It emphasises overcoming barriers of race, religion, nationality, and ideology, encouraging people everywhere to recognise their shared humanity.
In the context of this international conference, these themes resonated particularly deeply. Africa, with its rich tapestry of cultures, religions, and languages, provided a fitting backdrop for such a conversation. The African continent, while grappling with its unique challenges, stands as a testament to the resilience of communities and the enduring power of dialogue to foster peace and understanding.
Fostering Interreligious Dialogue
The presence of IRDIs, which specialises in interreligious dialogue and Islamic studies, was instrumental in shaping the discussions. This conference wasn’t just about Christian-Muslim relations; it was about fostering dialogue among all faiths and traditions, recognising that the future of humanity hinges on our ability to communicate across our differences.
Tangaza University, in its longstanding tradition of promoting interreligious understanding, played a central role in hosting this vital conversation. Partner institutions such as Umma University (a leading Islamic university in Kenya) and the Harmony Institute further enriched the discussions by offering diverse perspectives and experiences.
A Platform for Building Human Solidarity
One of the key takeaways from the conference was the emphasis on practical steps towards building solidarity. How do we, as global citizens, move from theory to action? The conference explored this question through panels, workshops, and discussions, offering tangible solutions such as:
- Dialogue Across Divides: Establishing open channels of communication between different religious, ethnic, and cultural groups.
- Educational Initiatives: Promoting curricula that emphasise peace, respect for others, and shared human values.
- Community Engagement: Fostering partnerships that encourage grassroots-level collaboration to resolve local conflicts and promote peacebuilding.
A Future of Hope
As the conference came to a close, the participants left with a sense of renewed hope. The message of Fratelli Tutti—that we are all connected as brothers and sisters—transcended the academic discussions, sparking real commitments to making the world a more just and peaceful place.
By building bridges, promoting dialogue, and fostering human solidarity, the Fratelli Tutti conference reminded us that, despite our differences, we are all bound by a common destiny. In these divided times, such messages are more crucial than ever.
As we move forward, events like this remind us that the path to peace is not easy, but it is possible. Together, we can work towards a world where unity, compassion, and fraternity guide our actions.
